INTRODUCTION

What if businesses and individuals in various cities nationwide could access fresh honey from local bees, without having to travel to a wild honey-farm to do so?

This is the question we asked. We couldn’t find anything in existence, so, we created something the region has never seen before. City Bees is currently raising capital to create the Tees Valleys first “Rooftop Honey Farm” which will be located on top of office, shopping centre, and multi-storey car park roofs across the Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Stockton-on-Tees city centres. Our mission is to bring the beauty of bees and the taste of fresh honey to the city, fusing nature with urban life.

THE IDEA

As a not-for-profit community organization, City Bees plans to produce and sell organic honey to local restaurants, shops, artisan markets, and of course, the general public through the City Bees website. We plan to achieve this through the purchase of “smart hives,” which can be remotely monitored from one central location. This eliminates the need for beekeepers to visit each and every hive location throughout the city every day or week. Beekeepers will only need to visit the hives as and when they are instructed to do so by the smart hive itself.

The demand for this idea is high, and will not only see countless local stores and restaurants saving money, but will also help locals and tourists enjoy fresh honey for sale. We see great capitalization potential in the concept of urban city beekeeping. Studies show that urban bees survive for longer, produce more honey, and are far healthier than rural bees. In fact, urban bees’ winter survival rate is 62.5%, compared to 40% when looking at rural bees. While rural bees produce just 8 kg of honey annually on average, their urban counterparts produce an average of 12 kg of honey annually.

What’s more, City Bees presents a way for cities to enjoy sustainable economic growth. The process will also have a positive impact on the health of our nation’s bees, while helping our agricultural community thrive. Why is bee health important? Well, over 70% of the crops we all eat are pollinated by the bees, no bees leads to no crops, the past decade has seen a steady decline in the number of bee populations, owing to colony collapse disorder. While the cause remains unknown, something must be done, hence, City Bees.

THE COSTS

The projected cost for the entire project is approximately £164,500, which will produce an annual produce profit estimated at £78,000. This profit will be reinvested back into the business to promote expansion while supporting daily and weekly operating costs, sales, and marketing.

All project costs are segregated into various critical project demands, including:

  • Site Surveys
  • Site Drawings
  • Site Preparation + Cleaning
  • Health + Safety
  • Assembly of Hives
  • SMART Apparatus
  • PR Services
  • Social Media Marketing
  • On-going Service + Maintenance
  • Legal + Insurance

Our Tees Valley target towns and cities are: Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Stockton-on-Tees.
