INTRODUCTION

Being in poverty means different things to different people. Poverty is a temporary experience for some and a long-term situation for others. People and families can have different fixed costs to contend with as well, like childcare, housing and costs associated with disability, as well as spiralling debts or ill health. Here at Clothe & Feed we have defined the material essentials people need for a decent standard of living, like basic food, warm clothing and the everyday family equipment essentials like pushchairs, baby equipment and toiletries.

Clothe & Feed started out in life being inspired by an empty food collection point inside a major supermarket in Newcastle upon Tyne. Surely there was a much better, cleverer way to improve levels of donated food relevant for Foodbank use… and there was! The eureka idea is that the supermarket could present shoppers with baskets of food ingredients for meals upon arrival at the entrance to the busy store, each basket could be purchased for say £5.00, this could help an individual or family with the key ingredients required to cook a number of fresh, hot, nutritious meals.

Well hats off to Morrisons Supermarket – Cowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, whose Store Manager saw the merit in such an idea and trialled the pilot for a week. To everyone’s surprise the pilot was an amazing success in selling £1,200 of food baskets resulting in a bumper delivery to the local Foodbank.

Charged with the success, a visit was arranged to the local Foodbank which coincided with the day Shelter Newcastle were holding their Foodbank client helpdesk and it was that meeting which revealed the urgent need to support young mums and vulnerable children in other complimentary ways such as baby equipment, clothes, toiletries, school uniforms and refurbished white goods.

Clothe & Feed now had a mission! It was to relieve clothing and food poverty for vulnerable people and dependents in local communities, giving each and every person affected a helping hand out of poverty.

THE IDEA

The Clothe & Feed Team would love to create a community hub aptly named the ‘Helping Hands Hub’ which houses all of the services that Clothe & Feed currently operate, being warm winter clothing, pre-worn school uniforms, essential baby equipment, toiletries, and nutritious food to make a hot meal.

We have identified several buildings with the size requirement of approximately 50’000 sqft. Easy access to the hub is imperative, so we have identified premises that can be accessed by walking, cycling, public transport and car.

Each premises identified has a warehouse for deliveries and secure goods storage, a large enclosed space to build the Helping Hands Community Shop for the distribution of clothing, food, toiletries and family essentials, utilities to build a large community kitchen for community cooking classes, a community hub space where people can integrate, communicate and meet new friends, and essential office space for the Clothe & Feed Team to continue the good work they carry out.

THE COSTS

We are looking to crowdfund a total of £255,000 for the warehouse/offices/building purchase, internal fit-out costs, warehouse racking, shop shelving, community kitchen appliances, internal decoration, signage, essential office equipment and general furnishing costs involved with a project of this size.

All costs are segregated into various critical project demands, including:

  • Architectural Drawings
  • Site Preliminaries
  • Internal Fit-Out
  • Internal Warehouse Racking
  • Internal Shop Shelving
  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Kitchen Equipment
  • Soft Furnishings
  • Internal Decoration
  • Internal & External Signage
  • Office Equipment
  • Office Furnishings
  • Legal & Insurance

THE BOTTOM LINE

Whilst the foodbanks deservedly are in the headlines, there is another massive need in local communities to help struggling vulnerable people and families with warm clothing, nutritious food, basic baby equipment and essential toiletries. The cost of these items is prohibitively expensive for many young families and often children go without the necessities many of us take for granted. This Helping Hands Hub will make a huge difference to its local community and will become the ‘go to’ local hub for people in need of those necessities, but who cannot afford them. The hub will also be a safe place where people can talk to each other in confidence about current issues in their life, and the availability of information, help and advice for all. The hub will provide training classes on the basic of life skills like cooking, cleaning and essential home care, to make for a better life.

Let’s join together and help fund this great project, by donating even the smallest amount you will be giving a helping hand to the most vulnerable of people in your community… be good, be a fundr!
