Plastic is all around us – a durable, lightweight, low-cost, and easy-to-modify resource. Unfortunately, such convenience comes at a price. It’s no secret that litter, especially plastic, is one of the most significant contributors to environmental devastation worldwide. Plastic and BPA aren’t only bad for your health, but they cause unthinkable damage to our planet too, polluting water and compromising countless species of animals. Quite frankly, something needs to be done – ASAP.

THE IDEA

The Clean Waterways project is a campaign with the vision of reducing the amount of plastic and litter we see in the waterways of the Tyne and Wear rivers. Both rivers are located in the North East of England. Clean Waterways revolves around the creation and implementation of a single floating device. The device was initially invented in Australia, and has already made an incredible difference to the amount of plastic and litter Australians see floating down the River Bandalong. To put the whole thing into perspective, let’s look at the amount of plastic and litter that is collected and “trapped” by the device.

If one litter trap device were to collect plastic and litter for a year, and we were to spread it out across a full-sized professional football pitch, the litter would fill the pitch entirely. The litter would be approximately 1-foot thick, weighing around 60 tonnes. That’s the equivalent of 3000 household wheelie bins. Debris can’t be dislodged once it’s trapped, and each device operates silently, 24/7, without the need for mechanical supervision or assistance. Additional security fittings eradicate vandalism concerns, and the devices will never impede water flow or cause flooding. Each device becomes one with the water, working in harmony with its natural flow to keep it safe, healthy, and clean.

THE COSTS

The Clean Waterways project will crowdfund with the vision of funding a total of 8 x litter traps. 4 will be assigned to the River Tyne, and the other 4 will be for the River Wear. It is projected that these 8 x litter trapping devices will trap around 480 tonnes of rubbish annually, equivalent to around 24,000 household wheelie bins.

All project costs are segregated into various critical project demands, including:

  • Site Surveys
  • Site Plans
  • Site Preparation + Cleaning
  • Assembly + Installation
  • PR Services
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Legal + Insurance
  • On-going Service + Maintenance

THE BOTTOM LINE

Plastic pollution is a growing problem in today’s world, what with the growing global population. The only way forth is to manage the amount of plastic and litter that surround us, something that will only rise in numbers as the years go on. Our litter traps will function as the hidden devices that protect our waterways, oceans, and people – preserving the environment, minimizing pollution, and creating a better nation for future generations.

After the successful delivery of this crowdfunding campaign the Clean Waterways Project aims to roll out more crowdfunding campaigns to fund similar projects across our network of rivers, streams and canals throughout the UK.
