At the end of 2019, the leader of the World Health Organisation issued a severe warning about the dangers of air pollution… Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus compared breathing polluted air in to ‘drinking dirty water’. Dr Tedros also warned that pollution is linked to countless health issues, including the development of children’s brains and the health of babies. Long-term exposure to air pollution reduces life expectancy by increasing deaths from cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and from lung cancer. It is estimated that long-term exposure to air pollution in the UK has an annual effect equivalent to 28,000 to 36,000 deaths, while the Royal College of Physicians estimates it costs the UK economy £20 billion per year.
It’s no secret that air pollution is a huge problem in all City Centres, but what exactly are we doing about it? Unfortunately, not a great deal in the grand scheme of things, and this is where Green-Seats makes its well awaited entrance…
The Green-Seats project will involve several bio-tech filter seats being placed around Newcastle City Centre in order to quantifiably improve air quality. The Green-Seats use plants to filter toxins from the air and provide the cleaning power of a staggering 275 trees per seat. Different types of moss bind environmental toxins such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides while producing oxygen at the same time. Integrated IoT technology delivers comprehensive information on performance and status as well as environmental data on the GreenSeats surrounding. The Green-Seats use plants to filter toxins from the air and provide the cleaning power of a staggering 275 trees per seat.
The Green-Seat project is looking to fund four Green-Seats for Newcastle City Centre. This round of funding will help achieve the completed concept, along with the necessary 12-month post launch overhead costs.
All project costs are segregated into various critical project demands, including:
- Research & Development
- Project Preliminaries
- Pre Setup
- GreenSeat Purchases
- Project Launch
- PR Services
- Social Media Marketing
- Legal + Insurance
THE BOTTOM LINE
A study has revealed that air pollution has been linked to more than 1 in 26 adult deaths in North East cities. Although Green-Seats won’t solve air pollution in our City Centres completely, they are a step in the right direction to filter our North East air and adapt to climate change.
