In 21st century Britain, everyone should have a safe place to live, unfortunately with between 4,000 and 5,000 people bedding down on UK streets every night, (a figure that has almost doubled since 2010) this is not the case. People become homeless for many different reasons, from illness such as mental health and addiction to social causes such as unemployment or lack of affordable housing. Shelter accommodation availability is at an all-time low, so vulnerable people are staying in hotels and B&B’s where they don’t get any support or feel like part of a community which in return drives them back to sleeping rough.
Introducing the Pod Pad Safe Shelter project…
The Pod Pad Safe Shelter project is a village of 80 recycled shipping containers that will be converted into homes. Each Pod Pad will feature a bed, shower room, kitchen area and lounge, all things items required to make a home comfortable and keep people safe. The Pod Pad community will feature an onsite supermarket where the cost of food items will be subsided. There will be a range of weekly classes for residents, ranging from cooking classes to fitness classes to inspire residents to live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle and to help them feel supported and part of a community. The standard rental term will be 6 to 12 months with the aim that residents will eventually be in a position where they can transition back into society.
The Pod-Pad project is looking to fund this first flagship site using the fundr ‘super investor’ network. This round of funding will help achieve the completed concept, along with the necessary 12-month post launch overhead costs.
All project costs are segregated into various critical project demands, including:
- Architectural Designs
- Project Preliminaries
- Pre-site Setup
- Pod Purchases
- Pod Installations
- Clean Energy Integrations
- Project Launch
- PR Services
- Social Media Marketing
- Legal + Insurance
THE BOTTOM LINE
Not having a safe place to call home is unimaginable to most of us, but to some it is unfortunately a reality and it is up to us as a community to help these people by providing a safe place for them to live and ultimately, end rough sleeping in the UK.
