INTRODUCTION

NBSFC Newcastle Blue Star FC is a football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Originally established in 1930, the Club were a dominant presence in the North East non-league set up for decades. Following severe financial setbacks, the club was sadly wound up in 2009 – This was a devastating blow for the community.

In 2018, a local businessman had a vision to bring the club back to life, he has worked tirelessly to re-capture the good old days and bring the community back together again. Whilst bringing the NBSFC glory days back, the club has aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community, to reduce health inequalities prevalent in the Scotswood area and create a sustainable community.

THE PROJECT

The Scotswood community have united together in the shared vision to create a Community Arena which will play host to a range of sports and music events and will be open and accessible to the whole community, the arena will also be seen as a hub where people can come together to feel part of a team environment and work on community projects.  On behalf of all community stakeholders, Newcastle Blue Star FC who are a not for profit Community Interest Company have led the way in developing plans for the Arena.

The plans include the development of 2 stands on each side of the performance space, changing rooms, floodlights, fencing, hard standing, additional car parking and a PA system. Detailed plans have been submitted for planning permission. NBSFC also have future plans to further develop the site, particularly to resurface and hopefully extend the small sided artificial grass pitch.

This project is essential to realise this vision and potential for growth and regeneration of this deprived area of Scotswood. There are no other performance spaces in the immediate area, which demonstrates the need and potential reach of the project. Whilst it is still early days of the NBSFC rebirth, they have already developed a huge following within the local community, the club currently have 18 junior and 2 senior teams catering for a mix of girls and boys.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Financial support is required to enable NBSFC to develop the site and make the Scotswood dream a reality.
